My Mother
April 30, 2025
BY Hibby Friedman
She stares at me, her eyes full of sorrow.
She’s waiting for me to leave the nest tomorrow.
She claims she loves me,
I say, she does not.
Why only love your daughter
on condition that her happiness will be caught,
and ripped & shredded by expectations she cannot reach.
Her daughter is a chicken, a flightless bird.
Her daughter has a voice
that cannot be heard.
