HOW TO SUBMIT

Crafting a Submission

When crafting a poem for Myrtle Beach's Public Poetry Project, think about the unique stories, emotions, and moments that make our community special. Your inspiration could come from the rhythm of life in our neighborhoods, the warmth of shared connections, or the sights and sounds of the Grand Strand.

Whether your perspective is shaped by quiet moments at the beach, bustling city streets, or the serenity of coastal living, your poem can capture the diverse spirit of Myrtle Beach and its people. This is a chance to celebrate the richness of our community in all its forms, highlighting what makes it truly extraordinary.

Tips from the Poet Laureate

Start with an emotion—something you genuinely feel. Writing from the heart, rather than pretending or striving for effect, creates a poem that truly connects. Look for the truth within yourself and express it simply. Truth, as Bo says, is automatic poetry. Use only the words that feel true and meaningful to you. In this way, your poem becomes a reflection of not just your voice but also the vibrant, multifaceted life of our community.

Public Poetry Project is a community outreach project created by the City of Myrtle Beach Cultural Resource Committee and poet laureate Bo Bryan. The project’s mission is to cultivate a love for language and the arts in Myrtle Beach by creating accessible public installations that invite community members of all ages and backgrounds to share and enjoy poetic expressions, thereby enriching the cultural fabric of our city and inspiring young readers and writers.
